Belgian Thibau Nys (Lidl - Trek) won Stage 4 of the 45th Tour de Hongrie in Etyek and increased his lead in the general classification.
On 11 May, the Tour de Hongrie's most unpredictable, hilly 167-kilometre stage awaited the peloton between Budapest and Etyek. The 117 riders were greeted by hundreds of cheering fans in Heroes' Square. At the start, Gergely Karácsony, Mayor of Budapest and stage patron; Dr. Péter Princzinger, President of the Hungarian Cycling Federation and CEO of Visit Balaton 365, the sponsor of the yellow jersey; and Károly Eisenkrammer, chief organiser, cut the start ribbon. After the slow start, the enthusiastic riders of AmaTour Budapest were able to cycle along the race route.
Meanwhile, the peloton was moving forward at a tremendous pace, but with constant attacks, there was no sustained breakaway for a long time. Eventually, on the climb of the Budapest-Balaton cycle route, Salvatore Puccio (INEOS Grenadiers), Niklas Märkl (dsm-firmenich PostNL), Sergio Meris (MBH Bank Colpack Ballan), Dusan Rajovic (Bahrain Victorious), Diego Pablo Sevilla (Polti-Kometa) and Matteo Moschetti (Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team) managed to break away from the peloton, but their lead never grew beyond 2 minutes. Märkl took the first two climbs and Sevilla the third, allowing Siebe Deweirdt (Flanders - Baloise) to retain the red jersey. In the sprint sprints, Sevilla scored the most points (13), but still has a significant gap in the points race.
The breakaway was caught 2 kilometres from the finish line. On the final climb (1,5 km; 6,1%), Lidl - Trek made the best leadout, with Mathias Vacek setting the stage perfectly for Thibau Nys in the yellow jersey. Only defending champion Marc Hirschi (UAE Team Emirates) was able to follow, but there was no doubt about Nys' victory. Tudor's Yannis Voisard finished third.
With Nys' victory, he increased his lead in the general classification to 14 seconds ahead of Diego Ulissi. The former European U23 champion has also moved into the lead of the points classification as well. Márton Dina continues to be the best placed Hungarian, moving up one place to 14th, 57 seconds behind.
