Four distinctive jerseys are waiting for their new owners at this year’s Tour de Hongrie. Let’s take a closer look at them.
WHITE JERSEY
The white jersey belongs to the best Hungarian rider in the General Classification. It used to belong to the best U23 rider, but after the race became an UCI 2.1 event in 2019, the organisers could only award four distinctive jerseys, so they dropped the Youth Classification.
The first time the organisers used a distinctive jersey for the local riders was back in 2004. This jersey, which was blue at that time, was won by László Garamszegi. The most succesful riders in this classification are László Istlstekker, who was the best Hungarian in 1994, 1995 and 1996, and Márton Dina, who won this title in 2019, 2022 and 2023.
The main sponsor of the white jersey is Magyar Közút.
RED JERSEY
The red jersey belongs to the leader of the Mountains Classification. Tour de Hongrie has 3 categories for the climbs, with only one 1st category ascent: the finish of Stage 3, Kékestető.
The first KOMs of Tour de Hongrie were used in the 1960’s – riders could gain time bonuses up to one minute! The design of the first KOM jersey was inspired by Le Tour de France – it was worn by Martin Kukk back in 1993. The KOM jersey changed its colour quite a few times: the red-white polka dot jersey became blue in 2001, then red in 2005, then polka dot again in 2008. Since the restart of the race in 2015, the jersey has always been red.
Only one rider in Tour de Hongrie history won the red jersey more than once: Slovakian Róbert Nagy triumphed in 2001 and 2002. The only Hungarians who have won this classification are Csaba Steig (1996), László Garamszegi (2004) and Attila Valter (2020). Last time, Austrian Sebastian Schönberger became the King of the Mountains.
The main sponsor of the red jersey is Cofidis.
GREEN JERSEY
The leader of the Points Classification wears the green jersey. The first of such classifications in Tour de Hongrie was established in the 1960’s, but there was no distinctive jersey for it. In 1993, Ukrainian Vadim Prisayenko was the first one to wear a red-white striped jersey, which became green later on. Interestingly, Zoltán Bebtó is the only Hungarian rider, who won the Points Classification back in 2001.
The sprinting field of Tour de Hongrie became stronger and stronger in the previous years. This time, riders such as Mark Cavendish, Peter Sagan, Dylan Groenewegen, Elia Viviani, Jordi Meeus, Arvid de Kleijn, Cees Bol and Matteo Moschetti will compete. However, with two mountain and one hilly stage, the winner of the Points Classification can be someone from the GC favourites, or someone from the breakaways as well. Last year, Matus Stocek (ATT Investments) won this classification.
The main sponsors of the green jersey are Skoda and Europcar.
YELLOW JERSEY
The yellow jersey belongs to the leader of the general classification. This jersey used to be red in the 1990’s because of the main sponsor of the race, but became yellow in 2001. Hungary is the most successful nation in the general classification with 19 wins, but only four of those came after the reestablishment of the race in 1993. The last 12 editions were won by 12 different riders from 12 different countries!
The reigning champion, Swiss Marc Hirschi will come back to defend his title. His main rivals will include Wout Poels, Óscar Rodríguez, Roger Adriá, Sylvain Moniquet, Harm Vanhoucke, Yannis Voisard and Tour de Hongrie 2021 winner Damien Howson.
The sponsors of the yellow jersey are Active Hungary and Visit Balaton 365.
