One of the most difficult situations in the history of the Tour occured in 1934, when the main sponsor left, leaving the race's future at stake.
Károly Szenes sorrounded by fans
Instead of 10.000 pengő (the Hungarian currency at the time), the Tour had to be organised from only 2000. However, the race still went on according to schedule! Even the peloton stayed international: the National Teams of Austria and Czechoslovakia (with Hungarian-born riders) competed against the best riders of Hungary. Károly Szenes triumphed on the 9th Tour de Hongrie.
