The race became bigger than ever: in Szombathely 20.000 fans cheered in the city under the pouring rain for 3 hours, while they were waiting for the late peloton. Nor the weather, neither the Hungarians could not stop Kurt Stettler, who won the 8th Tour de Hongrie with an ease.
Stettler finished the Tour de France 40th in 1935, but he was not the biggest name within the riders. It was two-times Tour de Hongrie stage winner, Italian Glauco Servadei, who won six stages at the Giro d'Italia and two at the Tour de France in his career.
Hungarians couldn't win a single stage (for the first time ever), but some unfortunate circumstances held them back. At one point of the race, after the leading breakaway passed, unknown culprits threw 5 kg of nails on the road, cousing tons of punctures and retirements.
