Changes in the government followed the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, which meant that the Tour de Hongrie had to take another six-year-long break.
The race became longer than ever, with 9 stages held around Hungary. The international riders were back: Germans, Romanians and Austrians competed against the Hungarians.
After a railway barrier helped them to reach the front of the race in Stage 2, Austrian Arnold Ruiner went on to win the stage, while his teammate, Adolf Christian took the lead in the General Classification. Nobody could catch him later.
